Mrs. Mary T. (née Kendra) Breznitsky, age 82, of New Castle, DE, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, March 16, 2012, at Christiana Hospital.
Mary was born in Freeland, PA, on August 30, 1929, daughter of the late Joseph Kendra and Helen France Kendra. She enjoyed a diverse and interesting professional career, working for the former Wilmington Piano Company, as a salesperson at the former Kennards Department Store, as an Avon consultant, and as a substitute teacher for Holy Spirit School and in the Colonial School district. Her favorite students were her Title I children at Holy Spirit who called her “Mrs. B.”
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Mary was a longtime member of Holy Spirit parish, where she was active in the Blue Army of the Blessed Mother and the Daughters of Isabella.
Mary loved playing the piano and singing. She also loved cooking big holiday meals, especially on Christmas Eve and Easter. She was at her happiest when spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Her husband was her rock. John tirelessly devoted his life and love to taking care of her throughout her illness, along with the help of their daughter, Rosemary.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, John E. Breznitsky; children, John Breznitsky (Linda) of Middletown, Jim Breznitsky (Sharon) of New Castle, Tom Breznitsky (Debbie) of Newark, and Rosemary Coleman (Brian) of Newark; brother, Joe Kendra (Nancy) of New Castle; sisters, Anna Cosgrove and Dorothy Varilla, both of Willow Grove, PA; grandchildren, Angela, David, Jimmy, Katie, Thomas Jr., Reneé, Michele, B.J., and Kevin; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen (Kendra) Connor.
Visitation will be held from 9 am to 10:45 am on Friday, March 23, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 am at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.
