Miriam Grace Montgomery “Monty” Perkins, age 87, of Newark, DE died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 14, 2012.
Born at home, in Reddington, Indiana, on April 23, 1925, Miriam was the daughter of the late Herbert Montgomery and Elma Hazard Montgomery. She was educated at Purdue University. She was active with the 4-H Club in West Brookfield, MA. She was the owner of the former Perkins Personnel Service in Newark, DE. Miriam was actively involved in her professional community and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Newark Chamber of Commerce, and President of both the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Newark and the Newark Soroptomist Club.
In her leisure time, Miriam loved traveling with her husband, Rowan, and together they visited Scotland, Europe, and Russia. She was a member of the Clan Montgomery Society International, and served the organization as president from 1990 until 1993 and award winning newsletter editor for more than 10 years. Miriam also enjoyed painting, pottery, sewing, and knitting. Above all else, she was a devoted matriarch to her large family.
In addition to her parents, Miriam was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Rowan Penrose Perkins II, and their son, Victor M. Perkins. She is survived by her children, Carol Landis (Bryan) of St. Louis, MO, Katherine Lafferty (Joseph) of Hendersonville, CO, Rowan M. Perkins of Stevensville, MD, Eric C. Perkins (Maura) of Elkton, MD, Patricia P. Waldorf (Steven) of Newark, DE, Daniel R. Perkins (Joyce) of Bear, DE, and Shelley Foster (Donald) of Wilmington, DE; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Arlene Spencer, of Indianapolis, IN, and her brother, Robert H. Montgomery, of Seymour, IN.
A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 292 W. Main Street, Newark, DE, where friends may call from 12 pm until 1pm. Interment will in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1 pm on Monday, May 21, 2012.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Compassionate Care Hospice and to Griswold Special Care for their assistance and care given to Miriam during her illness.
