Nancy E. Sturgis

June 1, 1929 - March 20, 2018

Nancy E. Strugis, age 88, of New Castle and formerly of Ocean View, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 20, 2018.

Born in Wilmington, DE on June 1, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Avery H. and Beulah (Edwards) Ellis.  Nancy grew up in Landsdale, PA, where she graduated from high school.  Returning to Wilmington, she worked for Butlers, Inc. and DuPont’s Treasury Department.  After raising her family, she worked at Pleasantville School as a librarian and at the Richardson Park Learning Center, retiring in 1989.

Nancy was married for 48 years to Charles H. Sturgis who passed away in February of 1999.  He retired from the U.S. Postal Service.  She was a 67 year member of New Castle United Methodist Church, where she served on the Alter Guild.  Nancy was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Red Hatters and the Miniature Club.  She was an avid quilter, loved the beach and was passionate about her family.

In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles H . Sturgis; brother, William Robert Ellis; and sister, Betty Jean Trexler.  She is survived by her children, Kenneth Sturgis (Eileen), Kevin Sturgis (Sandy) and Kathy Gravell (Bob); 10 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begain at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, 19720.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy’s name to New Castle United Methodist Church, 510 Delaware Street, New Castle, DE, 19720.

  • Memories of the New Year Eve gathering at Kevin and Sandy Home were always a fun time with Nancy. She will be sadly missed.

  • Thank you, Ashley. We displayed three of mom’s quilts at the funeral and she was buried with one of them. After the luncheon, we gave her quilts to family members. You had quilted quite a few of them.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. Nancy was my para at Richardson Park Learning Center for a few years. She was amazing with the kids and I think we made a great team. It’s been 30 years since we worked together, but the memories will always be there.
