Nelson Carey, Jr.

May 2, 1932 - January 15, 2022

Nelson Carey, Jr., affectionately known as “Pop” and “Junior,” age 89, of New Castle, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 15, 2022.

Born in Hockessin, DE on May 2, 1932, he was the son of the late Nelson and Mary (Clough) Carey, Sr. Nelson worked as a machinist at Electric Hose and Rubber. He later made his career as an auto mechanic for the State Highway Department, Bruce Industrial Company and Industrial Lift Truck Company, retiring in 1998. Active in his community, Nelson was a member of the New Castle Moose Lodge, First State Campers, Delaware Rolling Wheels and a lifetime member at Airport Speedway.

Mr. Carey was full of life and enjoyed the company of others and helping everyone. In his leisure time, he enjoyed dancing, camping, car shows, auctions, restoring classic vehicles and telling stories of his life experiences.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years of marriage, Elsie M. (Zebley) Carey; great grandson, Memphis Wegman; and sister, Betty Griffith. He is survived by his children, Diane Brooks of Wilmington, John N. Carey (Dee) of Elkton, MD, Mary Ellen Graham (Leroy) of New Castle and Deborah J. Wegman (Chuck) of Elkton, MD; wife, Sandra L. (Lawter) Barber; nephew, Donald Griffith; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 1 great great granddaughter.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.  A second visitation will be held from 9:30 am until 10:30 am on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the funeral home, where a funeral service will begin at 10:30 am. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance regardless of their vaccination status. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Nelson’s memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 669, New Castle, DE 19720.
