Mrs. Olive Springborn Artress, age 98, of Newark, DE, formerly of Lyndhurst, Willoughby Hills, and Mentor, OH, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013. She leaves her family and this world with the dual legacies of her love of learning and her love of natural beauty.
Born in Cleveland, OH on July 5, 1914, Mrs. Artress was the daughter of the late Frank J. Springborn and Ella Mae Trunk Springborn. She was a 1932 graduate of Brush High School in Lyndhurst, where she shared the title of class valedictorian. She would go on to receive her degree in education from Kent State University. A gifted teacher, she made her career in the Ohio public schools, working in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst, Gates Mills, and Willoughby-Eastlake school districts before her retirement.
Primary among her many hobbies and interests was her artwork. She was also an excellent bridge player and taught the game to beginners for many years. Additionally, she enjoyed playing golf, wood carving, dancing, bowling, birding, and reading.
Her beloved husband, Gordon J. Artress, passed away in 1978. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy C. Hayes, and brother, Herbert R. Springborn. She is survived by her children, Luellen Smucker of Newark, DE, James G. Artress of North Bergen, NJ, and Lauren Artress of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, Craig G. Smucker (Robin) and Adrienne B. Gruver (Joshua); and great grandchildren, Finnean B. Gruver and Tobias L. Gruver.
A celebration of Olive’s life will be held August 11, 2013, 2 pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark. Contributions may be made to Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark, 420 Willa Road, Newark, DE 19711. (Visit uufn.org)
