Patricia Marr Taplin

Born: 7/30/1928
Died: 7/25/2013

Mrs. Patricia Marr Taplin, known fondly as “Nana,” age 84, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2013.
Born in Providence, RI, on July 30, 1928, Mrs. Taplin was the daughter of the late Albert Royle Marr and Julia E. O’Leary Marr. She was employed for over 25 years as a professional secretary with the DuPont Company, beginning her career in the 1950s at the pigment plant in Newport and later transferring to the Nemours Building in downtown Wilmington, where she retired.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Mrs. Taplin was a founding parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in New Castle. She was a champion of local Catholic education and was active in supporting all of her children’s school activities for many years. Fiercely proud, too, of her Irish heritage, she greatly enjoyed frequent trips to Ireland with her husband, Walter, and her son, Dennis. Her travels there, combined with her lifelong passion for supporting the underdog, inspired her to become involved with the Ulster Project, an acclaimed international youth exchange program designed to promote peace and religious tolerance in Northern Ireland.
She was predeceased by her son, Dennis Gerard Taplin, and her daughter, Geralyn Julia Taplin White. She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Walter R. Taplin, Jr.; daughter, Patricia T. Hinchliffe of Annapolis, MD; son, Walter R. Taplin and wife Cecelia of Hockessin; sisters, Nancy Powers of Silver Spring, MD and Maureen Kidwell and husband Richard of Emmitsburg, PA; brothers, Michael E. Marr of Baltimore, MD, and Thomas A. Marr and wife Sharon of Westminster, MD; grandchildren, Jeremy, Scott, Jillian, Stephen, Brendan, and Christine; great grandchildren, Michael, Fiana, and Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 31st, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Taplin may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Ste. 205, New Castle, DE 19720.
