Paul Burge

February 11, 1927 - February 20, 2021

On February 20, 2021, Paul Burge, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away at the age of 94 at Christiana Care.

Paul was born on February 11, 1927 to the late John and Rachel Burge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Burge; brothers, Charles Burge and Ralph Burge; and sister, Anna Sentman. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Betty F. Burge; son, P. Wayne Burge (Jeanne); grandchildren, P. Todd Burge, Stacie Cook (TJ), Whitney Burge, Courtney Burge, Jason Burge and Andrew Burge; and four great grandchildren. He was also a second father and grandfather to Chuck, Karen and Dani Subda. Paul is also survived by a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

Paul served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II and was stationed in Japan. He was discharged in 1946 from Ft. Dix, NJ. Upon returning from the service, Paul went to work for Jos. T. Hardy & Sons Plumbing and Heating. He then moved on to work for DuPont as a pipe fitter, then retired.

Paul was a life member of the Christiana Fire Company and held many offices over the years. He was the oldest living member upon his passing. Paul, along with several other members, were major contributors to building the museum and the antique fire truck.

He enjoyed woodworking and gardening with many family and friends reaping the produce from his garden.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, followed by a funeral service at 12:30 pm. Face masks will be required for all in attendance. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Christiana Fire Company, 2 East Main Street, Christiana, DE. 19702.

  • Aunt Betty, Wayne, Jeanne and family, I have such fond memories of Uncle Paul and our family gatherings in the house across from the fire hall. He grew the best Lima beans! I’m unable to attend his funeral but will be with you in spirit. My love and prayers to you all

  • I am so so sorry to to hear or the passing of “Uncle Paul”. I have so many fond memories of his quick wit and orneriness that he shared with all of us at all the family get togethers in the old Burge house in Christiania. My Dad would stop at his place in Bear on his way to the shore and pick up lima beans that he shared with us, I sure miss those. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family and especially Aunt Betty.
    I wish I could be there to pay my respects at his service but will not be able to do so.
