August 10, 1931 - January 9, 2020

Richard R. “Dick” “Rich” Gary, Jr., age 88, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2020, surrounded by his loving family at Christiana Season’s Hospice.

Born in Wilmington on August 10, 1931 to the late Richard R. and Caroline Gary.  A native Delawarean, Dick grew up in Prices Run and attended H B Fletcher Brown.  Dick was the first Delaware Marine Veteran wounded in Korea and received a Purple Heart. He was also a well-known drummer playing professionally for 30 years with many different groups the last being Charlie Murray Trio.  Dick was a Sexton at Zion Lutheran Church for 25 years. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Rose M Gary; and his sisters, Marie Garyantes and Carol Clark.  Dick is survived by his daughters, Patti Downs (Larry) and Diane Henderson (Michael); granddaughters, Vicki, Tracy, Jackie and Theresa; 8 great grandchildren; and with 1 great-great grandchild on the way.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, January 17, 2020, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am.  Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dick’s memory to Season’s Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Ste 101, Newark, De 19713.

  • My heart felt sympathy for the family. What a pleasure it was to meet such a wonderful man and his loving family. Pop was, indeed a strong man, who instilled great values in his family! The unconditional love was present throughout his stay at Seasons. You all have been blessed with this wonderful attribute.   • Hi Uncle Dickie,

    I wish that we could have spoken one more time before you left us. I always enjoyed your phone calls. You were Uncle Hub’s best friend and he cherished you. I loved booking the 2 of you on the bus to Atlantic City every month with Delaware Express. I’m going to miss you and I’ll also miss sending you greeting cards on all the holidays! I know that you are happy up in heaven with Rose and I’ll be thinking about you.
