Robert E. Wyka, Sr.
October 10, 1941 - March 13, 2023
Robert E. Wyka, Sr., age 81, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, March 13, 2023.
Born in Wilmington, DE on October 10, 1941, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Ciszkowski) Wyka. Known to his family and friends as Bob, he attended St. Hedwig’s School in Wilmington from kindergarten through 8th grade and then went to Wilmington High School. Eager to serve his country, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and served in the infantry until being honorably discharged in 1963 at the rank of E-5 Sergeant. Bob was proud of his service and often spoke about his time in the Army.
Not long after his discharge from the Army, Bob met the love of his life Joan. Bob and Joan were happily married for 36 years and raised their family in New Castle. They loved taking walks in Battery Park and Bob used to joke about their anniversary cruises on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. They were always together.
Bob worked as a supervisor at Brosius-Eliason Co. until his retirement. Bob enjoyed working with his hands, creating beautiful pieces of woodwork for those closest to him. He loved spending time outdoors, tending to his yard, and continued his visits to Battery Park in Old New Castle after Joan’s death. Above all, he cherished his family the most, spending countless hours helping his children with various projects around their homes and spending quality time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob especially enjoyed his Sunday visits with family.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne K. (Davis) Wyka; son, Robert E. Wyka, Jr.; and sister, Roberta (Betty) Warwick. He is survived by his children, Dianne N. Wyka and Joseph W. Wyka (Carolyn); grandchildren, Alyshia M. Wyka, Joseph L. Miller, Derek F. June (Ashley), Melissa A. Wyka, Stacey L. Miller, and Alexandria J. Wyka; and great-grandchildren; Weston, Rion, Kolton, Matthew, Juliana, Aideen, Madison, Lillian, Haileigh Grace, Landon, Colton, and Connor.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am until 11:30 am on Monday, March 27, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s memory to the J. Allison O’Daniel VFW Post #475, 100 Veterans Drive, Newark, DE 19711.
