June 6, 1945 - April 11, 2021

Robert S. “Bobby” Ferris, age 75, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 11, 2021.

Bobby was born in Wilmington, DE, on June 6, 1945, son of the late Alma Ferris (Miller). He graduated from De La Warr High School in 1963, then joined the National Guard, and was a member for 6 years. Bobby worked for Phoenix Steel for 2 years, before going to work for the Insulators Union Local 42 in 1965. Starting as an apprentice, he worked his way up to be a journeyman insulator. Bobby’s work sent him to various job sites including Star Enterprises, DP&L Powerhouse, Edgemoor & Millsboro, DuPont Plant Experimental Stations, Chambers Works, Strauffer Chemical, Diamond Shamrock, Sun Oil, ICI, PSE&G, and various other plants. During his years with the local, he organized many golf tournaments, and served as an executive board member. Bobby retired from Local 42 after 38 years of service.

Bobby’s passions in life included golf, softball, and horse betting at Delaware Park. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching his nephews play little league baseball. Bobby himself played softball throughout the years for several New Castle County teams. He enjoyed golf and took several trips to Myrtle Beach to play. Bobby was also one of several members who formed the Terrace Athletic Club.

In addition to his devotion to family, sports, and work, Bobby was also devoted to helping others, specifically as a lifetime donor for the Blood Bank of Delmarva. He received a special designation by the Blood Bank as a member of the “Galloneer Club”, which is earned after donations provided reached the gallon mark. Bobby was entered into this club a phenomenal 11 times throughout his 94 total lifetime donations. He was also designated as a “Pink Dot Donor”, which qualified his donations to be specially delivered directly to the Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, to be used during children’s surgeries.

Along with his mother, Alma Ferris (Miller), he was preceded in death by his brothers, Christopher, Lawrence, and William Ferris.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda Ferris (Terranova); siblings, Charles Ferris, Leonard Ferris (Barbara), Cecelia Whalen (Wayne), and Marie Ledoux; and nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE, followed by a funeral service at 10 am. Face masks will be required for all in attendance. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bobby’s memory to The Parkinson’s Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
