Robert W. Stevens, age 81, of Newark, DE, died peacefully on May 14, 2012, at 8:48 am surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 9, 1930, and graduated from Upper Darby High School, Upper Darby, PA, and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, where he received a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree. After college he served in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant stationed in Erlangen, Germany. Upon being discharged he held various engineering and sales positions with DuPont, Firestone Plastics, and Allied Chemical, retiring from Tenneco Polymers in Houston, TX, as Director of Marketing.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Newark, Wilmington Kennel Club, Bearded Collie Club of America, and a former member of the Newark Country Club. Bob was an avid Phillies fan and a season ticket holder for many years. He enjoyed visiting his family, reading, playing bridge and golf, as well as traveling extensively throughout the world.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Frances Ann (“Nancy”), and their four children, William (Sarah) in Lafayette, CA, Robert (Virginia) in Bradenton, FL, Elizabeth Williams in St. Petersburg, FL, and Susan St. Germain (Daniel) in Austin, TX; and eleven grandchildren. He is also survived by Nancy’s brother, Richard Leonard (Lynn) and their two children.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 292 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711 on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at 11 am with visitation beginning at 10 am. There will be a reception following the service in the church’s Memorial Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Bob’s name to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN), 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 or to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, 100 Commerce Dr., Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713.
