Roger E. McClurg

Roger E. McClurg, age 74, of Bear, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

He was a son of Blanca Rosa McClurg Stephenson and the late Harold Ray McClurg.

Throughout his life, Roger held a love of aviation. He began flying while still in high school. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1970 with a B.S. in aerospace engineering. He continued flying through 1985 both as an instructor and as a charter pilot for Summit Aviation.

Roger was also committed to photography. He learned the art from his father and passed it on to both his son and daughter (now professional photographers).

During college, Roger developed a love for computers. While an undergraduate, he assisted his professor in developing a program for NASA during the height of the Space Race. After college, he continued working with computers in the Navy, then later for DuPont and CSC. During his career, his peers referred to him as a “mad scientist” for his knack for invention and discovery.

In addition to his mother, Roger is survived by his beloved wife, PJ McClurg of Bear, DE; son, Scott McClurg of Bear, DE; brothers, Harry McClurg of Richmond, VA, and James McClurg of Mount Pleasant, SC; daughter, Heather Siple of Wilmington, DE; and grandchildren, Rebecca Siple, and Zachary Siple of Wilmington, DE.       

All services will be held privately.

  • Roger was a great man and will be missed by so many. We will miss Roger for his great talent and enormous contributions where he gave everything he could. I have known Roger for over 40 years and was a lifelong friend to my dad and my family. Roger could engineer and create anything ….a great mind and talent. PJ and Scott so sorry for your loss.   • My condolences. I worked with Roger a number of times, we were in the same group for a while. We worked on computers many times together.

    I thought he was a funny guy..we always enjoyed working together.
