April 5, 1924 - October 7, 2022

Stanley Lawruk, age 98, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Friday, October 7, 2022.

Mr. Lawruk was born on April 5, 1924, and was the son of the late Rose (Zietek) and George Lawruk.

Stanley was a decorated WWII combat veteran and was often called Stanley “Lucky” Lawruk. He was a B17 flight engineer and top turret gunner with the Army’s 8th Air Force.  For his service he was awarded, among others, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, and French Legion of Honor. In recognition of his gallantry in aviation and his continuous service to the community, Stanley was inducted into the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame.

He worked for Tasty Baking Company for 33 years and was known as “Stan the Tastykake Man” in the community. After his retirement he enjoyed going to the casinos in Atlantic City and Delaware Park. He also enjoyed gardening. In his later years he became quite an artist. He was an avid Phillies fan and liked to listen to country western music.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. He was also a member of the Wilmington Manor Lions Club for 56 years serving as past President and Treasurer, and the Joseph B. Stahl Post 30 American Legion for 70 years serving as 1st Vice Commander and Membership Chairman for many years.

Stanley especially loved his family and enjoyed spending time with each of them.  He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and a dear friend to many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Pearl; his sisters, Helen Subach, Josephine Twardosky, Clara Huber; and his brothers, Johnny, Mike, and Frank Lawruk. Stanley is survived by his children, Kathy Gunton (Howard), Stanley P. “Stash” Lawruk, Jr. (Joni), Tim Lawruk (Samantha); 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am until 12 noon on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 801 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 noon. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

We would like to thank all the staff at the VA Hospital and especially the staff of the Community Living Center at the VA Hospital where Stanley has resided for the past 4 years for their kind, compassionate, and loving care.
