Mr. Thomas W. Byrne, age 82, of Delaware City, DE, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 21, 1930, Mr. Byrne was the son of the late Emmanual Peter Byrne and Harriet Goodchild Byrne. He proudly served his country in the US Army as a military policeman (“MP”) during World War II. In civilian life, he made his professional career as an over-the-road truck driver transporting a variety of goods all over the United States.
A gifted performer during the famed annual Mummers Parade in Philadelphia for many years, Mr. Byrne was featured in both the Comic Division and in the Fancy Brigade. He greatly enjoyed entertaining the many fans along the parade route and looked forward to perfecting new costumes and new routines each year. He was also an avid reader throughout his life and could often be found deeply engrossed in several books at once!
Most of all, Mr. Byrne delighted in his role as a devoted family man; he was always at his happiest when in the loving company of his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Winifred Cragg Byrne; children, Thomas W. Byrne, Jr. of Delaware City, Harriet D. Wessells (Andrew) of Delaware City, and John D. Byrne (Brenda) of New Castle; brother, James Byrne of Philadelphia, PA; sister, Patricia Sacifide of New Jersey; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings and a granddaughter, Kaylia.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, 2556 Susquehanna Road, Roslyn, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Byrne may be made to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Ste. 101, Newark, DE 19713.
