Mr. Vernon E. Grant, Jr., known fondly as “Vern,” age 62, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2011.
Born in Hamlet, NC, on May 19, 1949, Mr. Grant was the son of the late Vernon E. Grant, Sr. and Gladys Steen Grant. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and, in civilian life, made his career as a professional heavy equipment operator for 28 years with Cherry Island landfill in Wilmington.
In his leisure hours, Mr. Grant looked forward to watching NASCAR racing, as well as tending his bountiful vegetable garden each year. As a young man, he was a talented mechanic and greatly enjoyed working on classic cars.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon L. Grant; children, Tammy Brooks (Terry) and Vernon Ray Grant (Amy) of Rockingham, NC, Kellie Dillon (Scott Brandt) of New Castle, DE, and James Bates of Leesville, LA; brother, Jerry Ray Grant of Rockingham, NC; and grandchildren, Kyle, Jessica, McKenzie, Andrew, Chase, Riley, Shaynah, Ethan, Aaron, and Madison.
A funeral service will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, December 2, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 8:30 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
