W. Frazier Baldwin, Jr., of Greenville, DE, and formerly of Kennett Square, PA, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Thursday, March 21, 2013.
Born in Alexandria, VA, on October 30, 1917, Frazier was the son of the late William Frazier Baldwin, Sr. and Anna Barley Baldwin. He graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC, and would go on to receive his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Virginia Military Institute. (At VMI, he was a high-ranking cadet whose picture graced the cover of The Saturday Evening Post in 1940.) Following his graduation, Frazier accepted a position with the DuPont Company at its facility in Ashland, WI, where he assisted in explosives research developing improved dynamite and TNT during World War II. In 1944, he moved to Wilmington, DE, and was involved in many important DuPont initiatives, including the production of Freon and new plant openings both domestically and in South America. He retired from DuPont after 39 years of service.
Frazier was a member of the Episcopal Church of Ss. Andrew and Matthew (formerly St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church), where he served on the vestry and was a Junior Warden. He also served on the board of directors for St. Michael’s Day Nursery and the Delaware Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the DuPont Country Club, and the Greenville Country Club. Frazier enjoyed many years as a ham radio (K3WPE) operator with membership in the American Radio Relay League.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Virginia Speer Baldwin; two sons, Bill (Carol) of Wilmington and Louis (Elaine) of San Jose, CA; daughter, Susan of Winston-Salem, NC; two grandsons, Christopher and Colin; and sister, Anne B. Shore of Southern Pines, NC.
Funeral services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Frazier may be made to the American Red Cross, 100 W. 10th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
