Walter A. Hagelstein, Jr.

Walter A. Hagelstein, Jr., age 77, of Middletown, DE passed from this life on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Walter was a son of the late Walter A. Hagelstein, Sr. and Catherine Hagelstein.

Walter was a talented graphic designer and illustrater who retired from the DuPont Experimental Station after 32 years of dedicated service. He later worked at Technical Writers, Inc. Walter was a life long learner. He graduated from Brown Vocational High School in 1957 and completed his degree at the University of Delaware in 1980. Walter proudly served in the United States Air Force.

Faith and family were the most important things in his life. He started cycling at the age of 66 and joined the White Clay Bicycle Club. Walter enjoyed club, individual, and family rides. He successfully completed several MS Bike to the Bay rides.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amanda C. Hagelstein.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 57 years, Brenda A. Hagelstein; son, Walter Hagelstein III (Andrea); daughters, Jeanine Heath (Geoffrey, Sr.) and Adrienne Shearer (Andrew); grandchildren, Geoffrey, Jr. and Abigail Heath, Aubrey and Benjamin Shearer; brother, Robert (Gloria); sister, Ethelyn Curren (Joe); former daughter-in-law, Catherine Callaway; and best buddies, Ruby and Archie.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 15, 2016, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 701 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE, 19713, where a visitation will be held from 9 am until 11 am. Immediately after, a luncheon will be held in the church hall. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Paul’s FISH (Food Pantry) or Music Program at the address listed above.

    I worked with Walt many years ago when there was a print shop/graphic arts dept. at DuPont. He was a very kind gentle man who often spoke about his family and was always willing to help his co-workers. It was a pleasure working with Walt.
