Mr. Walter F. Megonigal, Sr., age 99, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2011 in Edgewater, FL. Walt resided in the Daytona/Edgewater area of Florida for the past seven years.
Walt was born in Wilmington, DE, on October 22, 1912. He spent all of his professional years in the Wilmington area working in the commercial and industrial construction industry as a professional union electrician. Many of the structures he worked on and managed to completion still stand today serving the commercial, educational, and social service activities of Delaware. Walt served his country during World War II as a worker on the Manhattan Project in construction of the Heavy Water plant in New Jersey. He was a lifelong member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 313 and a 32nd Degree Mason.
Walt was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Helen; his brothers, Harold, Clifford, William, and Joel; and his sisters, Blanche Megonigal and Erma Hitchens. Walter and Mary lived in Temperanceville, VA, for almost 30 years after their retirement.
Walt is survived by his three children, Sarah “Sally” Ann Carlson-Ditmyer of Port Orange, FL, Walter F. Megonigal, Jr. of Mathews, VA, and Robert D. Megonigal of Middletown, DE; his two grandsons, Joel T. Carlson and Walter F. Megonigal III; and four great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Walt’s Florida caregivers, Mrs. Valerie Townsend, her husband, Chris McCay, and their families of Edgewater for their loving and conscientious care during the past four and a half years.
Final farewells will take place from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, Wilmington Manor, New Castle, DE. A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Thursday, December 29, 2011, at Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave. and DuPont Rd., Wilmington, DE. Walt will be laid to rest with his wife, and near his mother and father.
