Wayne R. Wilson, age 77, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024, in the Community Living Center at The Veteran’s Hospital in Elsmere, DE, after a long illness.

Born in New Castle, DE on May 9, 1947, he was the son of the late Leslie George “Pat” and Eleanor (Holliday) Wilson. Wayne was educated in the New Castle school system and was planning to graduate with the Class of 1965 at William Penn High School, but he felt the call of duty and joined the U.S. Marine Corp prior to graduation. Wayne proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge from the Marines, Wayne completed his schooling and received his GED.
For many years, Wayne worked closely with his father and uncle in the family road construction business, Wilson Construction Company, as a heavy equipment operator. Despite dealing with the increasing physical effects of MS, Wayne was also very active with his two sons, Wayne L. and Sean. Wayne was a Cub Scout leader and also a coach for his son’s Little League baseball teams.
For the past seventeen years, Wayne was a resident of the Community Living Center (CLC). Wayne’s infectious smile and personality made him a favorite with the CLC staff. Even in his final days he always said goodbye by saying, “I’ll see ya when I see ya.” Wayne loved his family especially his two boys and his sister Diane “Sis”.
The family would like express a special thanks to the staff at the Veteran’s Hospital and the CLC for taking such good care of Wayne over the past seventeen years.

My heartfelt condolences to the Wilson family. Will keep you in thoughts and prayers. I volunteered at the VA hospital and would play bingo with the guys once a month before we had shut down.

Terribly saddened to learn of Wayne’s passing. Although our interaction at the CLC was limited, I recall how pleasant Wayne was always pleasant, quiet and grateful for any help I was able to give to him. I admired the dedication of his sister, Diane, who I got to know. I wish to extend my condolences to the entire family because I know how much he will be missed; not only by them but by everyone who knew Wayne at the CLC. Hopefully, Wayne and Tony will share many memories in their new heavenly barracks.
Rest in peace Wayne and thank you for your service.
