William D. Walker

Mr. William D. Walker, age 89, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2012.
Born in Wilmington, DE, on September 26, 1922, Mr. Walker was the son of the late Alfred D. Walker and Martha G. Little Walker. He honorably served his country in the US Navy for three years aboard the USS Livermore. Mr. Walker was a proud member of the Tin Can Sailors and was the recipient of 3 Bronze Stars. He worked as a Z operator for the DuPont Company’s Edgemoor plant for over 38 years until his retirement.
Mr. Walker was a 60 year member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He and his wife were actively involved with Meals on Wheels, dedicating over 25 years of service to the organization. In his leisure hours, Mr. Walker enjoyed trips to the beach with his family, spending time at the New Castle Senior Center, playing cards, and cheering on the Phillies.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara A. Hackett Walker, and three brothers, Alfred, Walter, and Vincent Walker. He is survived by 2 daughters, Sherry W. Patrick, and her husband, Craig, of Bridgeton, NJ and Linda S. Mumford of New Castle, DE; 3 brothers, Robert Walker of Bear, DE, Clifford Walker of Wilmington, DE, and George Walker of Middletown, DE; 4 grandchildren, Michael F. Catts, Jr., Andrew D. Mumford, Jennifer L. Durham, and Juliet A. Packard; and 5 great grandchildren, Hunter, Abigail, Ella, Quinn, and Dalaney.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11 am at Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 East Basin Road, New Castle, DE, where friends and family may call from 9:30 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Mr. Walker’s name be made to Asbury United Methodist Church at the address listed above.
