William “Bill” Mattson, Jr.

William “Bill” Mattson, Jr., age 73, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
Born in Camden, NJ on April 2, 1951, he was the son of the late William Mattson, Sr. and Helen (Peacock) Mattson. Bill made his career as a correctional officer for the State of Delaware for 22 years until his retirement in 2006. A portion of this time was spent as a handler in the K-9 Patrol Unit, where he served with his beloved dog, Onyx.
Bill was an avid history buff who enjoyed touring battlefields and military museums, especially Gettysburg National Military Park. He had amassed a large collection of miliary history books and could often be found reading or sharing his knowledge with anyone who would listen. His other interests included watching movies, practicing at the shooting range, and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Mattson. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Valerie (Gentile) Mattson; daughter, Andrea Orsini (Dean); daughter, Kimberly Dodd (Ryan); son, William Mattson, III (Andrea); and grandchildren, Jessica Orsini, Christopher Orsini, Nicholas Orsini, Ava Mattson, Leah Mattson, Xander Dodd and Aiden Dodd.
All services will be held privately.
