Mr. William H. “Bill” Farra, Jr., age 88, of Millsboro, DE, formerly of Richardson Park in Wilmington, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2013, after a brief illness.
Mr. Farra was a native Delawarean, born in Wilmington on August 26, 1924, son of the late William H. Farra, Sr. and Helen McCallister Farra. A 1942 graduate of Conrad High School, he would go on to serve his country proudly in the US Army during World War II. In civilian life, he made his career as a bookkeeper with the DuPont Company, where he retired after 37 years of service.
Active in his community, Mr. Farra was a Life Member of the Minquas Fire Company and the Five Points Fire Company, where he had served as vice-president, secretary, and a member of the board of directors. He was also a member of Armstrong Lodge #26 AF&AM in Newport. An avid and knowledgeable traveler, he visited all 50 states with his wife (favorite itineraries included trips to the beach, as well as casinos). For many years, he bowled with the DuPont Company league.
Well known for his generosity, Mr. Farra was pleased to support many worthy charities throughout his life.
His beloved wife of 13 years, Verna M. (Clark) Sterling Farra, passed away in 2010. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Michael Sterling. He is survived by his stepchildren, Susan Sterling-Yeager (Frank) of Dover, and Henry E. Sterling III (Elizabeth Ann) of Wilmington; grandchildren, Terry Zorich, Gregory Zorich, Richard Domyan, Amy Domyan, Jennifer Sterling, and Ashley Sterling; great grandchildren, Kerrin Carter and Tyler Zorich; and cousins, Ellen B. Willard and Ruth M. Kilmon, both of Wilmington.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Richardson Park United Methodist Church, 11 N. Maryland Ave, Wilmington, DE 19804; or to Five Points Volunteer Fire Company, 209 S. Maryland Ave., Wilmington DE 19804.
