William R. Abner, age 88, of Newark, DE, passed away with his loving wife by his side, on July 6, 2012 at Christiana Hospital, Newark.
Mr. Abner was born in Beach Grove, TN, the son of the late James E. and Hattie Harrell Abner, on November 14, 1923.
Mr. Abner proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He had worked for the Chrysler Corporation for 38 years as a metal finisher and was a member of the UAW Local #1183. Mr. Abner loved the outdoors and had many hobbies which included yard work, gardening, working around his home and building things; especially scale models. He was also a gifted mechanic and loved doing body work on cars. But nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his beloved family.
Mr. Abner is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Betty Jo Kesterson Abner; daughter, Gail E. Abner-Baldwin and her husband Bob of Kingston, TN; loving granddaughter, Shelby Waddell and her husband Christopher of Berkeley, WV; great grandchildren, Alexis Diana Zalar and Abigail Elizabeth Zalar; and sister, Betty Lou Ward of Lake City, TN.
In addition to his parents Mr. Abner was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Frank Abner and James Luther Abner; and half brother, Wayne.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30pm on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. Visitation will be from 6-8pm on Monday, July 9th at the funeral home. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
