Willie “Fred” McElroy, age 70, of Newark, DE, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at his home. His final days were spent surrounded by his family.

Born in Eufaula, AL on November 23, 1949, he was the son of the late Ruby Anderson and Leroy Anderson Sr. Following his time serving in the United States Airforce, Willie worked as a forklift operator for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 2003. He enjoyed playing basketball in his youth, bowling with his loved ones, having a cigar with his eldest son, making his world-famous fried corn for every family function, as well as competing with his teammates in the Wheelchair Olympics.

In addition to his parents, Willie was preceded in death by his brother, Leroy Anderson Jr.; and sister, Barber Lawrence. He is survived by his loving wife, Vivian (Best) McElroy of Newark, DE; sisters, Betty Anderson Tucker of Newport News, VA, Brenda Anderson of Newark, NJ and Diana Anderson of Climax, GA; brother, Henry Anderson of Newark, NJ; sons, Gregory McElroy of Rahway, NJ, Daniel Rodriguez of East Orange, NJ and Lamarence Best-Berfect of Willingboro, NJ; daughters, Zakiyyah Hasan of Maplewood, NJ, Le’Azia Best-Robinson of Newark DE, La’Tazia Best of Newark, DE and Laneia Best-Byron of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Stevenson Walker of Rahway NJ, Lamar Best of Willingboro, NJ and Samir Jefferson of Maplewood NJ; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 12 noon on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 12 noon. Face masks will be required for all in attendance. Interment will be held privately.
