Virginia Hoppenstedt Rundell

March 4, 1928 - August 15, 2025

Virginia Hoppenstedt Rundell, age 97, of Newark, Delaware, passed away on August 15, 2025.

Born in Pine Bush New York on March 4, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Addie Hoppenstedt.  Ginny was a public school teacher in Delaware for over 20 years.  A graduate of Russell Sage College and the University of Delaware, she was active in the American Association of University Women and a past president of the Newark branch. Ginny was a member of the congregation at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for 63 years where she served as a president of the Church Council and for many years a member of the troop committee of Boy Scout Troop 252.

Ginny was an avid traveler who visited every continent, including Antarctica, most more than once.  She was also an active member of Friends of Hopi. After retirement, Ginny frequently visited the Hopi reservation in northeastern Arizona where she taught in the local elementary school.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Horace J. (Rundy) Rundell, and her brothers Dr. Clifford H. Hoppenstedt and Dr. Gilbert F. Hoppenstedt. She is survived by her children, David H. Rundell, Karen R. Helme and Bruce M. Rundell; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

A private interment will be at the Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 110 West Church Road, Newark, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Virginia Rundell’s name to Scouts of America, Troop 252, c/o St Paul’s Lutheran Church, 701 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19713.

  • I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of Ginny Rundell. I grew up across the street from the Rundell’s house and have many fond memories of Ginny – how kind, friendly and intellectual she was. Sending my most sincere condolences and prayers to Bruce, Karen and David and the rest of the family and friends. I know she will be missed by all that knew her.
