Jose Antonio “Joe” Fernandez. Sr.

September 28, 1954 - December 13, 2022

Jose Antonio “Joe” Fernandez. Sr., age 68, of Bear, DE, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2022.

Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, on September 28, 1954, he was the youngest son of the late Rosendo Fernandez and Ruperta Colon.

Joe had such a zest and passion for life. He gave so much of himself to others. He was the epitome of selflessness. He was a proud “Nuyorican” having lived most of his life in the Bronx. He adored animals, traveling, and music. He loved baseball and enjoyed coaching and umpiring little league games. Joe was a huge NY Yankees fan. Joe lived his life in service to others and exemplified that by working as a postman, limousine driver and ultimately retired as a doorman. Joe had a fantastic sense of humor and was a great storyteller.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his siblings, Celso Alvarez and Juan Ramon Alvarez. He is survived by his children, Zynnette Fernandez, Erika L. Fernandez (Robert “JR” Lopez), Jose A. Fernandez, Jr. (Sonya Hall), and Tanya M. Fernandez; step children, Anya E. Nieves (Travis Morgan) and Edwin Nieves III (Zeilis Rodriguez); and grandchildren, Destiny, Jalyne, Aubrey, Josiah, Jeremiah, Tristan, Ava, Jaxx, Evee, Arya and Scarlett. As well as countless family and lifelong friends Michelle Alvarez, Esther Rosario, Haydee Montero, Ramon “Bosco” Capó, Lou Diaz and many more.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 1:30 pm. Interment will be held privately.
