Karen M. Patterson

September 19, 1968 - January 27, 2026

Karen M. Patterson, a devoted educator and vibrant community leader, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the age of 57, leaving behind a legacy of service, creativity, and joy.

Born on September 19, 1968, she was a daughter of Joan E. (Castura) Wilson and the late John C. Wilson, Jr. A proud 1987 graduate of William Penn High School, Karen dedicated her life to learning and mentorship. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in 1995 and her Master’s in 2013, both from Wilmington University. Her teaching career spanned decades, touching lives at St. Paul’s Catholic School, St. Anthony’s Catholic School, the Delaware Academy of Public Safety and Security, and MOT Charter School. Most recently, she served the students of McCullough Middle School before joining Odyssey Charter School, where her excellence was recognized as the 2025 Teacher of the Year.

Beyond the classroom, Karen’s heart belonged to her community. She was a life member and President Emeritus of the Wilmington Manor Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. An avid coach, she led numerous teams in volleyball, basketball, and band front, instilling confidence in countless young athletes.

Karen was famously a “Disney Adult,” celebrating her honeymoon and taking annual trips to Walt Disney World with her beloved husband. She was a self-proclaimed Hallmark movie and Friends fanatic. Karen was a master crafter; she loved making gifts for her family, friends, students and co-workers. When it was time to celebrate a life event or plan a game night, Karen was eager to help. She found her greatest happiness surrounded by her nieces, nephews, and her many “fur babies.”

In addition to her father, Karen was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Joseph Hypes. She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Ronald W. Patterson, Jr.; mother, Joan E. (Castura) Wilson; siblings, John III (Allie), Brian, and Sandy; father and mother-in-law, Ronald Sr. and Gretchen; brother-in-law, Ben (Brandi); and nieces and nephews, JC (Julia), David (Lora), Joey (Sierra), Olivia, Emma, Tristan, Lauren, Joshua, and another nephew, Dominick expected in March.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, New Castle, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the church. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karen’s memory to Northern Chesapeake Sheltie Rescue (NCSR), 205 Haynes Court, Abingdon, MD 21009 or online by clicking here.

  • The most inspirational, kind-hearted, and genuinely fun teacher I ever had the privilege of knowing. She cared about her students far beyond the classroom and saw us as people first. As a Firefighter/EMT, we connected on a level that went well beyond school grounds, and I’ll never forget how seen and honored I felt when she asked me to wear my Class Bs for the school’s 9/11 memorial service. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy—one I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. Rest easy, P. Dizzle. You will be deeply missed.
