Guillermina “Gigi” Marcial
November 27, 1934 - March 11, 2026
Guillermina “Gigi” Marcial, age 91, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
Born in Comerío, Puerto Rico, on November 27th, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Gilberto Marcial Gonzalez and Carmen Rivera Diaz. Guillermina was a Science and Religion teacher at Academia del Sagrado Corazón (ASC) in Santurce, Puerto Rico, from 1967 to 1987. She was and still is, praised by her students for her knowledge, dedication, and kindness. After 20 years of teaching, she pursued a Master’s degree in Health Sciences with a concentration in Nutrition. After completing her Master’s, she worked for several healthcare organizations in Puerto Rico before moving to Delaware in 2005. In Delaware, Guillermina worked at Westside Family Healthcare in Wilmington and at La Red Health Center in Milford, as Nutritional Consultant with a specialty in diabetes education.
Guillermina loved to dance, travel, and enjoyed gardening (especially her rose garden). But for her, there was nothing more precious than spending time with her five sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was especially proud that all of her five sons pursued and completed degrees in higher-education.
In addition to her parents, Guillermina was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, José A. Calderón Martínez; brothers, Victor and Gilberto; and sister, Delia Marcial. She is survived by her five sons, José Arturo, Carlos Gilberto, Jesús Ricardo, Héctor Luis, and Alberto Enrique; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren
A celebration of life will be held in Puerto Rico at a date to be determined.

So sorry to hear about Gigi’s passing. She was the first to welcome me when Joe and I moved to Spring Arbor. We talked on occasion but I could always see her checking her flowers with her little hat on. My prayers are with everyone. God Bless.

I am heartbroken by the loss of such a dear friend and coworker (La Red Health Center). She was one of those rare souls who carried warmth with her wherever she went. I will always remember the way her face lit up when she spoke about her children as there was such joy, such pride, such pure love in every word.
Her dedication to her patients was just as inspiring. She cared for people with a depth of compassion that can’t be taught. It was simply who she was. Anyone who crossed her path felt it.
I was grateful for the times I could visit her at home. Spending time talking and listening to her stories, hearing her describe her travels, are memories I will hold close. Even then, she had a way of making you feel welcomed, valued, and at ease.
She was truly a remarkable woman, full of grace, humor, and heart. I loved her dearly, and her absence leaves a space that words can’t quite fill. She will be missed more than I can say.

I knew some of them at Academia Sagrado Corazón where I was a student. Later on, I went to Teach at Academia (ASC) in the 70’s while Guillermina was still teaching.
She was a very good friend and an excellent teacher.

The first time I met Ms. Gigi was a few months before my parent’s moved in next door. I ordered a “souped up” Apple desktop computer and had it shipped to her house – avoiding the tax! She was gracious enough to accept the order, having not met me or knowing much about my family. I drove from NY to DE after work to pick it up, thinking it would be a quick exchange, and I should be home in about 8 hours door-to-door – that was, until, I sat and spoke with Ms. Gigi. We spoke for quite a bit and made a wonderful connection. I could have sat there talking to her all night. At around 9:30 PM, she gently told me, from pure concern, that I should probably start heading home so that I would get home with enough to rest before work the next day. Needless to say, I spent some time in NJ napping at a rest stop, exhausted, but so touched by her kindness and the gentle way about her. I knew then that she would be a great neighbor and friend to my parents. Throughout the years, I would come visit my parents, and sometimes, was lucky enough to see Ms. Gigi. In recent years, my trips were quick and her and I missed catching up, but I always thought about her – we would exchange Christmas cards and stay connected. Last year when I received her card, I held it in my hands a bit longer, smiling thinking back on the first time we met, and knew that this would be a card I would be holding on to for a long time. Ms. Gigi – thank you for your kindness and compassion throughout the years – you will be greatly missed!
