Michael M. Cavanaugh - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Michael M. Cavanaugh

February 2, 1944 - May 28, 2026

Michael M. Cavanaugh, age 82, of Milford, and formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

Born in Ebensburg, PA, on February 2, 1944, he was the son of the late Thomas and Rita (Myers) Cavanaugh. Michael moved to Delaware seeking employment and, in doing so, found the love of his life, Linda. He worked as an assembler, benefit representative, and later served as President of UAW Local #435 at the General Motors Plant on Boxwood Road in Wilmington.

Michael eventually relocated to Michigan, where he became Director of the Retirees Department for the International UAW in Detroit.

In the 1990’s, when GM announced the future closure of the Boxwood Road plant, Michael worked closely with Delaware Governor Tom Carper to meet with GM CEO Jack Smith. Through their efforts, the life of the plant was extended until July 2009—an accomplishment that remained a point of pride throughout his career.

Upon retirement, Michael and his wife, Linda, enjoyed many warm and sunny winters in Florida.

Michael developed a lifelong love of sailing during summers spent vacationing in Rehoboth Beach. He spent countless weekends with family and friends on the waters of Rehoboth Bay, the Great Lakes, and the Chesapeake Bay. One of his favorite adventures was a month‑long sailing journey from Michigan back to Delaware with his wife, friends, and sons after retiring.

He also enjoyed many rounds of golf, including a memorable golfing trip to Ireland with close friends. A devoted sports fan, Michael became an enthusiastic Eagles and Phillies supporter thanks to Linda’s influence. His love of sports extended to coaching his sons’ Little League baseball teams.

Michael’s childhood involvement in scouting sparked a lifelong passion for camping, leading to many family trips up and down the East Coast. That love continued into retirement and even inspired a YouTube documentary of a canoe trip down the Susquehanna River with his sons.

Over the years, Michael and Linda adopted many Dachshund rescues, giving each a loving home in Milford, DE, and in Englewood, FL during their winter stays.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by eight siblings. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Linda (Engberg) Cavanaugh; his sons, Brian Cavanaugh and Bruce Cavanaugh; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Hwy., New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Entombment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Hwy., New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s name to a charity of your choice.
