Albert R. Couden

February 21, 1950 - July 18, 2021

Albert R. Couden, affectionately known as “Al” or “Pops”, age 71, of Newark, DE, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

Born in Wilmington, DE on February 21, 1950, he was a son of the late Norman Leon Couden and Mary Mildred Lindell. Al very proudly served in the U.S. Navy. After his service, Al was a Merchant Marine employed by Sun Oil. He was employed at Chrysler Corporation Assembly Plant in Newark, DE for 31 years. After his retirement in 2007, Al continued his Couden & Sons General Contracting business.

Al had many hobbies. Two that he cherished most were working on cars and woodworking. He was an “Al” of all trades; there was nothing that he could not fix. Above all, Al loved his children, grandchildren, and family very much. He deeply cherished the time they all spent together.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his siblings, Richard W. Couden, Carson “Randy” Couden, Dale R. Barnett, Prudence L. Smith, and Babette D. Couden; and his granddaughter, Annabelle E. Couden. He is survived by his former wife and the mother to his 8 children, Pamela A. Couden of Middletown; sons, Douglas R. Couden (Megan), Bruce R. Couden, Nicholas M. Couden, all of Newark, Luke J. Couden (Kathryn) of Townsend, Adam R. Couden, Jordan T. Couden, and Micah J. Couden, all of Middletown; daughter, Tiffany A. Couden of Newark; siblings, Wayne N. Couden of New Mexico, Dewitt M. Couden (Janet) of Camden, Morgan P. Couden of Dover, Celeste R. Masden of Omaha, NE, Gwendolyn C. Thomas of Northeast, MD, Donna Jean Coroniti (Tony) of Dover, and Lititia “Tish” M.  Kozlowski (Mike) of Wisconsin; and 17 grandchildren.          

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Monday, July 26, 2021 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 12 pm on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at the funeral home. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance not immunized with the COVID-19 vaccine per the CDC and Governor of Delaware.  Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.
