Alice J. Avena
March 10, 1952 - October 1, 2023
Alice J. Avena, age 71, longtime resident of Odessa, DE, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
Born in Wilmington, DE on March 10, 1952, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Joyce (Love) Steil. Alice graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1970 then later earned her degree from the Nursing School of Wilmington in 1972. Alice provided exceptional care to her patients and was a valuable member of the OR team at Christiana Hospital, as well as A. I Dupont Children’s Hospital. She retired in 2017, after dedicating many years as a registered nurse.
Known by her grandchildren for her “Mimi’s meatballs”, Alice enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She was a true animal lover; she had horses which she loved to ride and her beloved Westie dogs and Bentley. Alice was known to travel, two of her favorite places to visit were Anna Maria Island, Florida and Cape May, New Jersey. She was also fond of antique shopping. Alice will be remembered as a loyal friend and a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Most importantly, she adored her role as “Mimi” and cherished making lifelong memories with her family.
In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her sisters, Connie Steil (1958) and Barrie Lee Herrman (1991). She is survived by her loving husband of 23 years, Anthony J. Avena; sons, Casey Taylor (Jamie) and Nathan Taylor (Debbie); grandchildren, Zoey, Noah, and Emma; and siblings, Victor and Jennifer.
A memorial service will begin at 9:30 am on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE. A committal service will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

I worked with Alice on the cardiac OR team at Christiana Hospital. I would take her ‘call’, and, she would thank me by bringing me home made meals! It was a win-win. She was a great cook! Wish I had had some ‘Mimi’s meatballs’! I hope you all have many, many memories to comfort you now and in the days to come.
