Alice Marie (Tyne) James

Alice Marie (Tyne) James, passed into the hands of God on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the age of 97. Alice, a resident of Hockessin, DE at the time of her death, was born in Yonkers, New York and was the daughter of John and Alice Tyne.

Alice was married to her beloved husband, the late Robert John James Sr, for 62 years. Alice was also preceded in death by her son, Robert John James, Jr., and her brother, John Tyne. She is survived by her children, Maureen James Chandler (John Kirk), Dr. Kenneth Joseph James (Susan), and Dr. Carol Jean Hoffman (David); grandchildren, Melissa Anne James, Erin Chandler Hauck (Colin), David James Hoffman, and Wyatt James Hoffman; two great grandchildren; and her much loved cousin, Dr. Oliver Harper (Sharon) of Phoenix, Arizona.

As a young woman, Alice modeled for the John Roberts Powers agency in New York City, and loved to tell the story of how the young Tony Curtis sang a song to her on a television variety show. Alice was a 1978 graduate of the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in art history. She was a devoted wife and mother to her family, always putting them first in her time and attention. She was a skilled artist, creating in many media: oils, watercolors, acrylics, and needle point, stained glass and furniture upholstering. She was painting florals on furniture long before it became popular recently, and she loved decorating her homes. Her beautiful watercolor flowers and sketches are used on the labels of wines from Paradocx Vineyard, so if you have ever enjoyed a bottle of wine from Paradocx, you have also been treated to a piece of her art.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, May 30, 2025, at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, 200 East Main Street, Newark, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
