Alonzo Balthrope
December 31, 1964 - May 8, 2023
Alonzo Balthrope, lovingly known as “Al” and also by his family nickname “Peanut”, of New Castle, DE, was blessed by the Lord with 58 years to be with family and friends before calling him to rest on Monday, May 8, 2023.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA on December 31, 1964, he was the third youngest child of the late Hayward Balthrope and Loretta Pinder. Al attended the Ashbourne School in Elkins Park, PA and later studied at Delaware Technical and Community College. He worked as a train conductor at Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Regional Rail, until he was involved in an accident. Al truly loved his job and was saddened he was no longer able to work for the company. He then worked part time for Frank’s Pizzeria in Bear, DE for many years. They called him a close friend and part of their family; Al was always there for them.
Al cherished his extended family at Christ Servants Mission, where he served in the Power 4-U Community Center and Agape Storehouse Pantry projects. He was the warehouse manager alongside La’Tonya Gosnell from 1999 until his passing. Al always served with a smile and a joke, pain and sickness never stopped him. He worked all the way up to December 2022. Al will be missed greatly for the impact that he had on everyone’s lives that he touched. May we never lose his love and gratitude in our memories.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his siblings, Patricia Pinder and Anthony Pinder. Al leaves to mourn his passing, his son, Carrington Vick; sister, Gina Balthrope; nephew, Fernando Pinder and his wife; and Godparents, Dr. Anthony and Dr. Zelda Carter. Alonzo also had a huge impact on helping and raising two young women, TJaira A. NewKirk, and Araiah J. NewKirk; and God grandson, Zacari I. NewKirk.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 1 pm on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 1 pm. Interment will be held privately.

Al will be deeply missed. While I’ve only known him for a few years he took me in as one of the family within the first 5 minutes of meeting him. I could always count on him for a big hug and words of encouragement when I needed it. Prayers of healing and remembrance for his family and friends.
