  • Amanda, a three languages major in our department, enrolled in my Capstone course in fall of 2013. The course was more a community of scholars that came together weekly to ponder global fiction in translation that grappled with the hard issues of life. These young minds set to work on impossibly difficult events attempting to see light, hope, and reason in the chaos. Amanda’s leadership in the class, her fine writing, and, most of all, her kind and sunny nature are what I will always recall as I remember the sweet young woman who sat just to my left in the circle. That light, hope, and reason continue to be elusive is all the more reason to remember and treasure those who labor on the side of good.

  • Betty, so sorry to here about your granddaughter. My deepest sympathy

  • We extend our condolences and thoughts to the family of Amanda for your loss.

  • Dear parents, grandparents, siblings, all the relatives of Amanda:

As a mother myself, words escape me. As Amanda’s instructor in SPAN300 (Advanced Grammar & Composition I), followed by SPAN401 (Advanced Grammar & Composition II), it was my privilege to have had her twice in class: she was the ideal student we professors cherish and long to have. Amanda was never taken aback by the high expectations of the courses, always showed great enthusiasm in the learning process, arrived with her homework prepared, was an active participant, whose radiant smile was contagious and welcoming to everyone. To this day, I still have her audiovisual presentation on King Charles I of Spain (SPAN300), as well as her compositions and some emails, which she addressed joyfully and using her best manners, “¡Buenos días, Profesora!” and ended with “¡Hasta la clase!” On one of them, she greeted me with “¡Buenas tardes, profesora!” although she wrote it late at night; when I mentioned this to her, she apologized (there was no need to apologize, of course) and explained: “Discúlpeme, Profesora. En alemán, solo se dice el equivilente de “buenas noches” antes de acostarse, y por algún razón (la que ahora no sé), no pudo recordar otra manera de dirigir el e-mail.” Yes, she made sure to keep our correspondence in Spanish all the time! Once a course ends, sometimes students don’t even say “hello” if they happen to cross their professors around campus; certainly not Amanda, who would stop and take time to talk to me, as happened last semester, when she went back to campus after having graduated: “You’re so old now, Amanda!”, I joked; she laughed, we chatted a little, until it was time to part ways. I can still see her sunny self and hear her farewell: “¡Hasta luego, profesora!”

Most sincerely, –Amanda’s “profesora”, Asima Saad Maura
