Mr. Arnold H. Gardner, age 93, of New Castle, DE, passed away at home on Friday, June 14, 2013, with his daughters at his side.
“Hap” was born on October 3, 1919 in Philadelphia, PA. His family moved to Queens, NY, when he was four years old, and he moved his own family to South Plainfield, NJ, in 1955.
A World War II veteran, Hap served in the US Army from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific arena. He and his wife, Dorothy (an Army nurse), met at Fort Monroe, NJ, before their deployment. He was honorably discharged at the rank of captain from the 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment.
Hap worked at Hanover Bank on Wall Street until the 1960s when he became an agent for State Farm. Following his retirement in 1983, he and Dorothy moved to New Castle.
Hap attended the American Institute of Banking, St. John’s University, and NYU. He was a member of Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green, Jerusalem Lodge #26 F & AM (Plainfield), Elks Lodge #2298 (South Plainfield), and Lydia Chapter #41 OES. He also served as a past Advisor for Radiant Assembly #25 ORG.
He was predeceased by his beloved Dorothy in 1995 and by two infant children, Arnold and Claire. He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Jean Ferguson (Paul) of Statesboro, GA, and Claire Marie Gardner of New Castle (with whom he lived): sister, Lily Elizabeth Kochman of Winnsboro, SC; grandchildren, Joshua Gardner Ferguson (Devon), Jonathan Paul Ferguson (Erin), Courtney Marie Gardner (Christopher Clarke), and Jennifer Rebecca Berger (Jason); and great grandchildren, Evelyn Claire, Graham Tucker, and Charlotte Agnes.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, June 19th, at Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green, Second and Harmony Streets, New Castle. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. There will be no viewing.
Hap requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green, P.O. Box 47, New Castle, DE 19720.
