Mr. Arthur J. Angelo, Jr., age 79, of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013, at his home.
Born in Minersville, PA, on September 10, 1933, Mr. Angelo was the son of the late Arthur J. Angelo, Sr. and Sylvia Deramo Angelo. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War.
In civilian life, Mr. Angelo enjoyed a diverse and interesting career. He was a manager with Woolworth’s in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland for 16 years and the manager of National 5 & 10 in Newark for 12 years. He would go on to accept a position as the manager of environmental services for Wilmington Hospital, where he retired in 1996 after 18 years of service. Following his retirement, he returned to National 5 & 10 to work part-time.
A devout Catholic, Mr. Angelo was a longtime member of St. John’s-Holy Angels parish. He was very proud of his Italian heritage and was active for many years in the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), Giuseppe Verdi Chapter #2457, in Wilmington. An avid sports fan throughout his life, he greatly enjoyed cheering each season for his favorite teams: the Eagles, the Phillies, the Flyers, and the University of Delaware football team.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Ann Lazarski Angelo; sons, Michael A. Angelo (Linda) of Dover, James Angelo (Karen) of Newark, and Arthur K. Angelo (Erika) of Newark; sisters, Mary Deramo of Wilmington and Sabina Quinn of Minersville, PA; and grandchildren, Michael S., David, Christopher, Jason, Justin, and Jennifer Angelo.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their compassionate and excellent service to Mr. Angelo during his illness.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, February 27th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 am on Thursday, February 28th, at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, E. Main and N. Chapel Streets, Newark. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Angelo may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 702 B Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805; or to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), 455 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713.
