Betty Alice Sweetman
June 19, 1944 - December 7, 2024
Betty Alice Sweetman, age 80, of Townsend, DE, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Born in Wilmington, DE on June 19, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Hassel and Alice (Taylor) Van Dyke. Betty made her career working in the cafeteria at Hodgson Vo-Tech High School.
Betty enjoyed giving back to her community as a member and past president of the Townsend Women’s Club. Dedicated to her faith, she was also a member of Townsend United Methodist Church. In her spare time, Betty enjoyed visiting casinos to try her luck. She also loved to travel out West.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Heather Sweetman; sisters, Carol Sweetman and Barbara Malatesta; and brothers-in-law, John Sweetman, Gregory Malatesta, and Robert Taylor. She is survived by her loving husband, John W. Sweetman; sons, Walter Sweetman III (Stephanie) and Brian Sweetman (Tammy); sisters, Joyce Taylor, Laureen Stigile, and Hope Moore (William); 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
All services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to Townsend Women’s Club Scholarship Program, c/o Ginny Poore, 638 Massey Church Road, Smyrna, DE 19977.
