Betty Ruth Ward (Mom Mom)
April 6, 1937 - October 23, 2023
Betty Ruth Ward (Mom Mom), age 86, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, October 23, 2023.
Born in Russellville, AL, on April 6, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Joshua Bowlie Slay and Christine (Willis) Miller. Betty worked as an account technician in various positions with the State of Delaware for 25 years until her retirement. But her favorite job was when she retired and got to stay home and take care of her grandchildren.
In her spare time, Betty would be found tending to her yard, growing flowers, or watching movies on TV. She looked forward to spending her summers at Shawn’s Hideaway in Millsboro playing bingo and going to the casino with her cousin, Jo Ann Reedy. She especially enjoyed golf cart rides with her beloved pet, Mitsie, and sitting around the campfire. She spent a lot of time with her daughter, Pamela, finding new adventures and places to explore. She loved taking trips, especially to Disney World, going on cruises, camping, going to the beach, fishing, crabbing, playing cards and video games, and just relaxing at home. Above all, her greatest treasures were her children and grandchildren, whom she helped to raise. She was a good mother who was always there for her family.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her stepfather, Lewis Miller; stepbrother, George Miller; granddaughter, Amanda C. Ward; and close friend, Billy Lawler. She is survived by her children, Frank J. Ward, Sandra C. Ward, and Pamela C. Ward; brothers, Jim Slay from Alabama, David Miller, and James Miller; stepsisters, Patricia Miller and Georgie May Matson; grandchildren, Christopher Ward, Vicki Ormsby, Rebecca Fulton, Eric Zane, Nicholas Ward, Mark Ward, and Joseph Haug; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 Noon on Monday, October 30, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 12 Noon. Interment will follow in St. George’s Cemetery, St. George’s, DE. The family requests that all attendees wear Betty’s favorite color, blue.

What a beautiful tribute of lovely pictures. The video allowed us to feel as if we were a part of so many special memories that your family shared. Some of her expressions are priceless and there is so much loved that was shared with her family. We feel honored to have a peek into Betty’s life with her cute outfits and love of the summertime. She will be missed by so many who loved her…but memories live on in the heart.
