Bruce W. Long - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Bruce W. Long

August 29, 1956 - October 16, 2024

Bruce W. Long, of Newark, Delaware, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. He was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 29, 1956. He was the son of Nancy Louise (Walls) Long and the late William Dee Long.

Bruce lived in Monterey Park, California before moving to Colts Neck, New Jersey. Bruce was a graduate of Marlboro High School in New Jersey. After his time in the military, he moved to Neptune, New Jersey. Later, Bruce moved to Newark, Delaware to help care give his mother. He would accompany her on RV trips to visit her daughter, Carol (Long) Provow, her children and grandchildren down South.

He proudly served in the United States Army from 1978 to 1983 as a Computer/Machine Operator and Infantryman. He was awarded the Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Professional Development Ribbon (2), Sharpshooter Qualification Badge Pistol (.45 Caliber), Expert Qualification Badge (Rifle M-16), and Good Conduct Medal (2nd Award). He was honorably discharged.

After leaving the military, Bruce was a data entry employee processing checks in a financial institution and a security guard in a warehouse distributing retailer.

Bruce was known to enjoy Hawaiian Punch and Oreo cookies but not the double stuff kind because those cookies had too much crème. He was affectionately known as “Batman” since his name was Bruce Wayne. He enjoyed painting military miniature figures and constructing intricate miniature World War II military battle scenes in the European Theater. He was an avid Board Game player and an expert Lego builder. Bruce would travel to make sure he saw his nieces, nephews, great niece, and great nephew to be present in their lives.

Uncle Bruce could always be counted on to play hands-on imaginary games with his nieces, nephews, grandniece and grandnephew. Their special childhood memories included summers of Epic Super Soaker and water balloon battles, and, of course, playing with the Ultimate Evil “Brunhilda”. They fondly remember Uncle Bruce sitting at the Children’s Table during holidays and birthdays, squirting Reddi-Whip in their mouths. He was the “Fun Uncle” as he always made sure to do funny and goofy things to make them laugh. He was always ready to help family and friends with whatever they needed. He loved acting the clown to have people laugh. Above all, he cherished his family and loved making memories with them. We all have wonderful memories of Bruce and will miss him.

In addition to his father, Bruce was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas E. Long. He is survived by his mother, Nancy L. (Walls) Long; sisters, Linda (Long) Liechty (Melvin) and Carol (Long) Provow (David); nephews, Christopher Tarnowski and Michael Provow (Kelsey); nieces, Jenna (Provow) Henkel (Erik), Nicole Provow, and Ashley (Tarnowski) Riedel (Michael); great niece, Veronika Henkel; and great nephew, Harrison Henkel.

All services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bruce’s memory to Delaware Hospice, 630 Churchmans Road, Suite 200, Newark, DE 19702 or online by clicking here.
