Charles A. “Charlie” Newton

September 17, 1936 - May 2, 2023

Charles A. “Charlie” Newton, age 86, of Historic New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

Born in Tamaqua, PA, on September 17, 1936, he was the son of the late George B. and Ella A. (Wetterau) Newton. Charlie was a graduate of Tamaqua Area High School where he ran track. He met his wife at 20 years old and they were married for 66 years. Charlie started his own electrical business and moved to Delaware, where he began a career with ICI Americas, Inc. as a pneumatic instrumentation technician for 32 years until his retirement.

Charlie was devoted to serving his community in any way that he could. He volunteered for years for the United Way and at the VA Hospital in Wilmington, where he received an award for his hours of service. He was a member and Past Master of St. John’s Lodge No. 2 A.F. & A.M. and Past Associate Grand Guardian of IOJD. Charlie was also active in the Order of Eastern Star as Past Grand Patron of Delaware and Past Worthy Patron of Caesar Rodney Chapter #8 in New Castle.  Charlie was a man of deep faith and was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church.

An avid outdoorsman, Charlie was a member of the N.R.A. and loved to go hunting, fishing, or take camping trips. He was eager to help anyone, and enjoyed working around the house, capable of fixing anything. In his free time, Charlie enjoyed being involved with his children’s activities, including Little League, Cub Scouts, Webelos, and Boy Scouts, serving as Scout Master for Troop 414. He was also a talented, amateur photographer. Charlie will always be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a man who lived by principles, and was a patriot who loved his family and his country. Charlie led by example. All who knew him loved and respected him for not what he said, but what he did.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his son, William A. Newton; grandson, Walter L. Sherlock IV; sister, Mary L. Shafer; and son-in-law, Skip Godwin. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan B. (DuVal) Newton; children, Craig S. Newton (Michele), Joan E. Godwin, and Charlotte A. McCall; daughter-in-law, Jill Newton; grandchildren, Nicole Newton, Samantha Sherlock, Aaron Newton, and Aleczander Newton; and great-grandchildren, Emily, Jimmy, Ariah, and Lochlan.
