Born on June 4, 1934 in Richmond Hill, NY, he was the son of Charles Richard and Anna (Schafer) Maass. Chuck graduated from Alfred University with a B.A., Economics and Business, where he completed the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program and received his commission in the United States Army.

Charles George Maass proudly served on active duty before transitioning to the United States Army Reserve (USAR), dedicating over 28 years of combined service to his country. Throughout his distinguished military career, he was Commander U.S. Army Reserve Field Artillery Battery, Brookfield, CT, and was deployed in Domestic Stateside Operations during the Korean War and Berlin Crisis. He later served as Commandant, Delaware U. S. Army Reserve School, and Commandant, Delaware Army National Guard Academy, before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A natural and highly respected leader, he was known for his integrity, dedication, and steadfast commitment to his soldiers and mission success.

Chuck balanced his demanding military commitments with a successful civilian career, earning his M.A., Business Management, Central Michigan University, and holding management positions in research, analysis and product planning at Thiokol Chemical Corp., Elkton, MD, and Burroughs Corp., Paoli, PA, and became Vice President and General Manager at Alden Bugher Associates Real Estate Inc., Newark, DE. Chuck brought his strong business management skills to the University of Delaware as a full-time faculty member of the School of Business and was the Co-Founder and Director of the Delaware Small Business Development Center, providing students opportunities to gain insight into business operations while helping small businesses grow and succeed in the Newark community. Chuck enjoyed many years as a Small Business Management Educator, Speaker, and Private Consultant, bringing the same core Army values of loyalty, duty, and integrity to each workplace throughout his civilian career.

Beyond his military and professional achievements, Chuck Maass was a devoted parishioner at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. His deep faith guided his life, providing him with strength and a profound desire to serve others. As an Eagle Scout, Chuck was a member of The National Eagle Scout Association and continued his scouting career as Scout Master of Troop 252, District Activities Chair, and Council Activities Chair of the Del-Mar-Va Council BSA. Being a man of ideas, he created and lead the Boy Scout Chesapeake Challenge of 1979. The Boy Scouts of America Del-Mar-Va Council awarded him the Order of Merit in 1978 and the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth in 1987. Chuck was a Master Mason and member of Nur Temple Masonic Body and was recently recognized as a Brother Mason of 70 years. A few of the numerous organizations in which he was actively involved and held leadership positions were the Delaware Swimming and Diving Officials Association, the Alfred University Business Executive Advisory Council, and the American Legion Post #10.

He was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who cherished time spent with his family.
