Mr. Charles L. Bowen, Sr., age 85, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2012.
Charles was born in Wilmington, DE, on May 16, 1927, and was the son of the late Paul and Elva Bowen. He was a graduate of William Penn High School and the Wilmington Police Academy. A veteran of the US Navy, Charles proudly served our country during World War II. He was employed by Penn Railroad and AIG Insurance Company, before joining the New Castle City Police Department. Charles retired from the department at the rank of Lieutenant in 1983.
He was a current member of both the Delaware City Club and St. Anthony’s Club of New Castle. In his leisure time, Charles enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and watching the St. Anthony’s football and softball teams compete. He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Dallas Cowboys, and never missed watching a game with his buddy, Joe Medora. Above all else, Charles will always be remembered as a very loving and caring person.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman, Alvin, Jimmy, Wilbert, and Paul, and sister, Marion. He will be dearly missed by his son, Charles L. Bowen, Jr.; brother, Leslie Bowen; granddaughters, Shane, and her husband, Adam, Amanda, and Danielle; and 3 great granddaughters, Fayth, Kayla, and Emma.
Family and friends may call from 6 pm until 8 pm on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, September 28, 2012, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713.
