Claude E. Short, age 86, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

Born in Bluefield, WV on January 4, 1939, he was a son of the late Thomas L. and Ada Louise (Bowman) Short. Claude began his career in 1957 as an assembly line worker with the UAW Local 1183 for Chrysler Corp. where he dedicated 35 years of service until his retirement.

Claude was very civic minded and loved volunteering, especially with the food bank. He also served as the chair and co-chair of the UAW Local 1183 Retirees. In his spare time, Claude could often be found working in his flower garden or landscaping. He also loved rooting on his favorite sports teams. Most of all, Claude will always be remembered as a family-oriented man and loving husband, father, grandfather, and a dear friend to many.

Claude is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Ann “Mickie” (Yeager) Short; children, Claude A. Short (Jeanne), David E. Short (Rosemarie), Stephen J. Short (Mabell), and Susan E. Salter (Herman); stepchildren, Brian C. Kanto (Julied), Christopher M. Kanto (Corrie), Jill A. Kanto, and Amanda M. Organek (John); brother, Charles L. “Chuck” Short; 21 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.

The Short family would like to extend a special thank you to Claude’s hospice team; Kathy, Jessica, Kristina, Latrina, Susannah and Lisa, for their excellent care and kindness.

All services will be held privately.

  • I remember living next to Claude in White Hall development in the late 70’s, He had the greenest and well-kept lawn in the area. My condolences to the family.

  • Claude, a sweet and gentle man whom I was blessed to have crossed paths with. You will be missed by everyone who loves you. May you rest in the grace of God’s eternal love.

    I remember working with Claude and his son at Chrysler for many years. I grew up in Newark so I also knew Chuck Short.
