Earl E. Walker, Sr.
August 20, 1940 - March 22, 2023
Earl E. Walker, Sr., age 82, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.
Born in Middletown, DE on August 20, 1940, he was a son of the late Lee L. and Rose Anna (Jones) Walker. Earl was educated in the Delaware segregated school system, graduating from Louis L. Redding Comprehensive School as class Valedictorian in 1961. This is one of his proudest accomplishments, considering he had previously dropped out of school three times. He would later obtain a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Education from Delaware State College in 1965 and 1987, respectively. Earl was a life-long learner. He shared his love of knowledge with Maryland and Delaware public school students until his retirement from the New Castle County Vocational Technical School District in 2004.
Earl had a passion for serving his community and frequently talked of his days on the Delaware State Human Relations Commission (1973-1978). Other achievements of his include leading the Delaware Summer Youth Conservation Program – where he and his team of Middletown youth built several community parks, helped renovate the Everett Theater, and bricked Middletown’s Cochran Square. Many people, however, may remember Earl for his devotion to his family. Earl married the love of his life, Leola, on September 24, 1965, spending 57-year blissful years raising a family together.
Earl loved tinkering around the home and was known for “fixing things”. He could be frequently seen mowing his lawn, landscaping, and shoveling snow.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his siblings, Luther and Virginia. He is survived by his loving wife, Leola (Handy) Walker; children, Lisa and Dr. Earl E. Walker, Jr. (LaDale); grandchildren, Sedona, Nile and Trey, to whom he was Pop-pop, and Darron (Kimberly), to whom he was Pop Walker; siblings, James, Alberta, and Ardie Todd; sisters-in-law, Mary Flamer and Delores Grandison; brothers-in-law, William Flamer and Howard Grandison; and many more close family and friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 10 am. Interment will be held privately.

Mr. Walker,
You were the greatest teacher that touched so many kids lives. You always welcomed me with good morning and afternoon, and always made sure I was doing well in my classes. You always left a great place in my heart and I will always remember the talks you gave me about life.
