Edith A. Choma

Edith A. Choma, age 84, of Lewes, Delaware, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Sunday, May 28, 2023.

Edith was born in Wilmington to the late William and Edith McLennan. After graduating from Mount Pleasant High School in 1957, she worked as a secretary at various companies. Edith stayed home to raise a family until she went to work at Widener University, and then at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware where she was an Administrative Secretary until her retirement in 2005. Edith and her husband, Joe, retired and relocated to Lewes, Delaware

Edith’s artistic career began in ceramics and then progressed to porcelain and watercolors.  She was an extraordinary artist who developed a unique painting style using a fired porcelain as her canvas. Edith loved to paint animals, birds, and florals which she meticulously detailed and transferred to porcelain. Her artwork was exhibited at Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Delaware; at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania; and at the Yellow Springs Art Show in Yellow Springs, Pennsylvania 1984-1986.

Another passion of Edith’s was the founding of her company, Gnomes United ©.  Her whimsical gnome characters were brought to life in her writings and paintings, gnome collector plates, and watercolor artwork. Her gnomes were featured in the May 15, 1984 edition of The Plate Collectors magazine and in the January 7, 1979 edition of the Wilmington News Journal.

She enjoyed shopping, crossword puzzles, reading, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Affectionately called MomMom, she was known for her homemade chicken tenders. Edith had a sweet tooth and couldn’t resist desserts, butterscotch candies, and chocolate truffles. She loved animals, especially her children’s pet canines.

In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; and brother, Arthur McLennan. She is survived by her children, Michele Wolfe (Joe), Joseph (Lynn) and Scott (Desiree); sister, Audrey Schinske; and eight wonderful grandchildren, Alyssa Choma, Christina Choma, Jennifer Wolfe, Jessica Crozier, Joseph Wolfe, Kristin Choma, Alexander Choma and Lauren Choma.

A memorial service will begin at 11 am on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edith’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online by clicking here.

4 Condolences for Edith A. Choma

  • We love you and miss you mom forever.

  • Enjoyed spending time with Edith when she was at Michele and Joe’s family gatherings. She was always dressed so smartly and had a fashion sense; must have been from her art background. She told me one of her favorite stores was Chico’s, and needless to say, I became a fan as well. She will be missed, but kept in our memories along with her spouse, Joe. Love to the family, Rosemary

  • May the memories you shared keep your mom alive in your heart forever. God bless you and your family.

  • To the Choma Family,
Our family will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We are sorry for your loss.

    Kindly,
    Sturgis/Biddle Family
