Edwin S. Carlisle, age 70, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, April 19, 2019.

Born on May 31, 1948 in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late William H. and Harriet L. (Pyle) Carlisle. Edwin proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Upon discharge from the Navy he joined the Army National Guard of DE and also served in the Air National Guard.  He retired from the 287th Army Band in 1991.  He was a volunteer EMT before being hired by New Castle County as an EMT.  He then transferred to the Special Services Warehouse for New Castle County retiring from there as Acting Supervisor.

Active in fire service throughout his life, Edwin was a lifetime member of Holloway Terrace Fire Company where he held several offices, including Financial Secretary, Rescue Lieutenant, Rescue Captain, and Fire Police 209 Unit. He also held offices with the NCC Fire Police Association as 2nd Vice President from 2013-2014, 1st Vice President from 2014-2015, President from 2015-2016, and most recently as the first Liaison Officer to the NCC Sheriff’s Office since 2018. During his dedicated career, Edwin was awarded the 2013 New Castle County Fire Police Officer of the Year presented by the New Castle County Police and the DE State Police; Chief’s Award presented by the Fire Chief of Holloway Terrace Vol. Fire Company on April 12, 2014, and the first annual Col. Cheryl A. Kelly Volunteer Service Award presented by the NCC Fire Police Association in December 2018.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Margaret (Mansell) Carlisle; sister, Thelma Kempista (William); nephews, Michael (Suzanne), Brian, and Kevin (Pamela) Kempista; and great nieces, Mackenzie and Zoey Kempista.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE where a funeral service will follow at 2:30 pm. Interment will be held privately in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.    

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Holloway Terrace Fire Company, P.O. Box 684, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • So sorry for the loss of this quiet, gentle Man. Though we were not close as adults, we were very much so as children. Ed rarely had top billing with two little girls as competition. Very close in age, Thelma, Eddy, and Donna were the Three Musketeers of the family. Cousins sharing a little niche in a Large Family. RIP Eddy.

  • Margaret and family, I am deeply saddened to read about Ed’s passing. I worked with Ed back in the early 80s. He was a dedicated EMT and also someone who took interest in his Co-workers.   • Mr. ED Was my next door neighbor throughout my teenage years . I remember so many times he would be on his step having a cig and relaxing. We would always speak, I would say “how ya doing” and he would reply ” how you doing”. I’m sad for his passing.
