Eileen G. (Germuska) Mattey

May 12, 1942 - July 16, 2023

Eileen G. (Germuska) Mattey, age 81, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Summit, New Jersey on May 12, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Marie (D’Agostino) and Charles Germuska. After graduating from Bernards High School, Eileen received her nursing degree from East Orange General Hospital Nursing School. While attending nursing school she met John P. Mattey. After marrying John, they relocated to Wilmington, Delaware where she worked as a registered nurse at The Memorial Hospital. John and Eileen were happily married for 36 years until his passing in May 2000.

Eileen was fortunate to stay home to raise their family, occasionally working as a substitute school nurse. When their children were older, she returned to work and found the job of her dreams as a showroom nurse for Apria Home Health Care (formerly Homedco) where she worked until her retirement in 1999.

Eileen was a member of St. Margaret of Scotland RC Church. She enjoyed reading, watching tv and spending time playing with her beautiful Himalayan cat, Sophie Blue, who will miss her tremendously. Since 2018 Eileen was blessed to be able to reside with and be cared for by her daughter Diane, son-in-law Steve and her granddaughters Katy and Morgan DeSatnick.

Eileen is survived by her children, Christine M. Suiter (William, III) of Wilmington, Diane M. DeSatnick (Steven) of Bear, and John P. Mattey Jr. (Jennifer) of Canton, MI; sister, Barbara Kinney of Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren, Shannon Kern (Greg), William Suiter IV, Andrew Suiter (Shanna), Nicholas Suiter, Katy DeSatnick, Morgan DeSatnick, Jackson Mattey; and 3 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12:30 pm on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 12:30 pm. Interment will be held privately.

10 Condolences for Eileen G. (Germuska) Mattey

  • My deepest condolences to all the family as you meet this pathway’s end. Aunt Eileen had a specific gentleness that I find hard to describe, but its existence is unmatched in human characteristics, I believe. It is love, joy, and peace, no matter what life brings. Chrissie, Diane, and John, to have been raised by such a person makes you blessed in a unique way. I thank God for Aunt Eileen’s graceful existence on this earth and for the legacy she has left her children and their families. May God bless you all. You had it GOOD! ♥️

  • I am thinking of your mom, dad, and your whole family today. I can hear her voice as she spoke to your two little dogs, Heidi and Susie? growing up and calling you inside on summer nights. May you have peace and comfort soon.

  • Dear Mattey family,

I am so sorry to hear of your beloved mother’s passing. She was always such a kind and loving mom to all the kids in the Highlands. I have enjoyed seeing her pictures with her beautiful family that Chrissie posts on Facebook. I send prayers of comfort to all of you. May your rich memories bring you peace.

    Love to all,

  • Cherish the memories..PRAYERS

  • One of my favorite fellow classmates of Bernards High class of 1960. She was also a Facebook friend as well. It was obvious that she was well loved.

  • I am so sorry to hear of “Germ’s” passing. I know we were not in contact in recent years but I will always remember our fun and hard times in nursing school. I am aware that life was difficult for Eileen but she made it work for her with the wonderful help of your family 60 years since nursing school but I still remember good times. Eileen and I also graduated from the same high school. Prayers for all her family and rejoice in your memories.

  • How wonderful to have lived just two doors away from the Mattey family! Eileen and John set a fine example of how to be good neighbors and friends and set a high bar for raising a family.
John, Diane, and Chrissy, you have so many amazing memories to hold onto and pass down through your families. Your parents left a great legacy. Sincerely, Ruthann and John Moyle
