Eliseo “Jay” Vergara - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Eliseo “Jay” Vergara

August 18, 1953 - October 17, 2024

Our Beloved, Eliseo “Jay” Vergara, unexpectedly passed on October 17, 2024. Jay was born on August 18, 1953 to his parents, Eliseo Vergara and Providencia Acevedo Bonilla, and lovingly raised by his mom, step-father, Hugo Mercado, and “Pop,” Don Ciro.  He met and married the love of his life, Ursi Vergara. Jay and Ursi shared a beautiful love story built on faith, family, and friends.

Everyone who knew Jay understood that his family meant the world to him.  He was a dedicated father to his only daughter, Elyse Baerga, and her husband, Jose Mike Baerga. He took immense joy in loving and watching his three grandchildren, Michael, Jordan, and Jacob grow.  Jay’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren brought so much love and happiness to his life and he cherished any moments that they all shared together.

He was a loyal and faithful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend.  Jay dedicated his life to making the lives of those he loved more fulfilled and strived to leave a lasting impact on each person’s heart he touched.  He was known for his generosity, courageous heart, storytelling, comedy, faith, and compassion for anyone in need.

Jay spent his career serving as the Deputy Chief of the NYC Sanitation Department for nearly 30 years.  He was an avid sports fan who loved competition and was always loyal to the NY Giants, win or lose, and all of the NY sports teams.  Jay loved to observe nature, loved eating good food, traveling, dancing, and a good opportunity to get into a debate.

He is survived by his wife Ursi; daughter, Elyse; son-in-law, Mike; his grandchildren, Michael, Jordan, and Jacob; and his sister, Nancy Mercado.

Jay’s legacy will always be how he made people feel, how passionately he loved, the time and memories spent with those he loved, and his golden heart.

A funeral service for family and friends will be held 9 am on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a visitation will follow from 10 am until 1 pm. Interment will be held privately.
