Erika Grabher Burke
Erika Grabher Burke, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and lifelong friend to many, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Erika was a woman of deep faith, having been a longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church in New Castle, Delaware, where she was actively involved in the ELCA Women’s Group, Martha’s Circle, and the Fellowship Committee. In recent years, she was a cherished member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hockessin, Delaware.
Erika was married for 23 years to her late husband Richard G. Grabher, with whom she raised three amazing children: Barbara Jane Grabher, Erika Grabher Angelo, and William George Grabher. She later found happiness again in marriage to Edward A. Burke Jr., her devoted husband of 18 years. She was also a loving stepmother to Dennis and Billy Burke.
Together, Erika and Ed were passionately involved with the Shriners Hospital and Nur Temple in New Castle, DE. They participated in numerous fundraising events and cherished the friendships and community found through their involvement. Erika especially enjoyed traveling with Ed—whether it was to Reliance Stadium in Texas for the Shriners All-American football game, a breathtaking Alaskan cruise, the Colorado Rockies, or an unforgettable trip to Japan to visit a granddaughter.
Fall brought Erika special joy as she and Ed loved attending the Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth Beach, where they took part in the annual parade with the Nur Temple.
Erika was a woman who treasured family above all. She leaves behind three cherished grandchildren—Jake, Madison, and Nicholas Grabher—as well as many beloved Burke grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her warm and generous spirit also extended to lifelong friends, some of whom she had known for nearly 70 years. She fondly recalled summer picnics and holidays shared with the Werbitsky, Middlebrooks, Halls, and Shields families.
She had a passion for celebrating life, decorating her home for every holiday, and donning her favorite festive Christmas sweaters. Proud of her German heritage, Erika was a member of the Delaware Saengerbund in Newark, DE, where she enjoyed German music and traditions. She was also a proud and spirited fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, never missing the chance to attend a Phillies game on Mother’s Day.
Erika is survived by her loving husband, Ed Burke; daughter, Barbara J. Grabher and spouse, Caroline Kalinowski; daughter, Erika Grabher Angelo and “favorite” son-in-law, Art Angelo; son, William G. Grabher and spouse, Barbara L. Grabher; grandchildren, Jake, Madison and Nicholas Grabher; and numerous Burke grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Erika is predeceased in death by her parents, William and Gertrude Strauss; and her sister, Rita Strauss. She is also remembered with love by extended family and countless friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Hope Lutheran Church, 230 Christiana Road, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

Dear Ed and Grabher and Burke families,
So many happy memories of Erika at Hope Lutheran and the Shine events.
How proud she was of the Last Supper mural at Hope that Dick so lovingly created. The name Grabher was synonymous with service to and love of God and humanity.
Erika is probably helping the angels plan the next bazaar.
May her spirit inspire those left behind and soar in the realms above.
Peace, Comfort and Love.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to all the family of Erika and her many friends. What a wonderful woman she was who touched so many during her life. During their school years, her kids, Barbara, Erika, and Billy knew that Mom always was going to be there and in support. We were very fortunate to have taught each and knew that Mom always supported us as teachers and coaches. Her kindness and love never ended. We are proud to have known Erika throughout these many years, and she will always have a special place in our hearts. We think of Barbara, Erika, and Billy as if they are our own and know of our love, pride, and care for each of them. Ed has a special place in our hearts for his everlasting love of Erika. You two were a very special couple. We will be with you all in spirit, love, and continuing prayers from afar. Much love from your adopted parents!!!!
