Ernest Derrick Sudler, age 71, of Bear, DE, was called home to rest on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Christiana Care Hospital.

Born in Dover, DE, on July 13, 1951, he was the son of Jean (Dabney) Sudler and the late Ernest B. Sudler, Jr. Derrick or Ernie, as he was called by family members, attended Mt. Zion AME Church as a child and was baptized on December 25, 1957, by The Rev. Donald G. Ming. His education started at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. From there he attended Dover Junior High School and later Dover Senior High School. Ernie enjoyed playing different sports throughout his academic career, including Pop Warner Football, Pony League, and Varsity Football. He later graduated in 1973 from Delaware State University. Ernie began his career at Delaware Trust Co. in Dover, DE and later headed the Wilmington Office as a Branch Manager. He later worked for Kraft Foods in Dover, DE where he retired. Ernie met and eventually married his wife, Helen Mayfield on July 10, 1976, and to this union a son was born, Ernest Derrick Sudler Jr.

In addition to his father, Ernie was preceded in death by his son, Derrick. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 46 years, Helen (Mayfield) Sudler; grandson, Markell Wright Sudler; and mother, Jean Sudler.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ernie’s memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
